With the 11th pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins select:

Minkah Fitzpatrick – S – Alabama
H: 6’0″ / W: 204lbs
NFL Player Comparison*: Antrel Rolle

Strengths:

  • Quick feet/ability to change direction
  • Great closing speed
  • Good range
  • Ball hawk
  • Physical

Weaknesses:

  • Needs to play wiser, not faster
  • Better as a safety than a corner; can improve coverage skills

Reaction:

Fitzpatrick completes the secondary for the Miami Dolphins, while also providing a boost to the linebacking unit. His ability to find the ball and close down on a play is exceptional, though he will occasionally run himself out of a play by attacking too aggressively. He is a physical tackler, though can improve on wrapping up his opponent. By drafting a safety that can roam centerfield, the Dolphins now have the ability to put either TJ McDonald or Reshad Jones (or both) down in the box to follow the RB, cover a TE or spy on the QB. The Dolphins defense instantly improves in two positions, and allows them to take the best player available while also filling a need.

Growing up a passionate Dolphins fan in Jets territory, Jason learned from an early age that life as a Dolphins fan wasn’t going to be easy. Previously the Sports Editor for his university newspaper, Jason has experience writing columns, creating game recaps and conducting interviews with Hall of Fame athletes (Harry Carson and Yogi Berra are two of his proudest interviews). When he’s not dissecting the latest sports news, you can find him perplexed over the Dolphins offensive line woes or involuntarily introducing music to his neighbors.
